Here's a writeup on son'ys PR department i did a while back.
An overview of the sony welcome back package
As I am sure you are all aware, SCEA has reported a significant financial loss this fiscal year thus far.
This is in part due to the Playstation 3 console and the recent breaches to the servers, which resulted in personal information being stolen.
The major problem lies in just how much Sony's stocks have dropped in the last month. A net loss of 23 or more percent is certainly nothing to sneeze at. That's about 1/4 your total revenue gone. its gonna be hard for SCEA to gain back enough trust from their members, or manage to rebuild their public relations with their consumers enough to ensure that more people will buy their products.
An example of this lack of consumer regard would be the suggestions section on the official Playstation site, or the delay in informing their customers of the recent breaches.
Now, that's not to say they aren't at least trying to save face whilst making amends with a few gestures and deals. They're just forgetful, not arrogant entirely.
The "welcome back" program, while a kind gesture, and well received by their new consumers, is in fact quite a slap to the face to the already existent ones, as well as a perfectly timed marketing promotion for the Playstation plus service.
The titles released as free gifts are mostly first or second party titles, that will have little or no cost to their bottom line sales this year, as they have already received the maximum they had expected to obtain previously.
This is a smart business move that will in fact help mend their relations to the undecided masses that may want to buy the Playstation 3, while keeping financial loss to a minimum.
On the other hand, its a shame, considering that several consumers already own some if not all those titles. It leaves the loyal and previously existent console owner pretty much high and dry should they already own some or all of the titles. Its my hope that for those who already purchased the titles being given as a "make well gift", will receive some other form of compensation.
The Playstation plus service, while originally a clever idea to bolster online sales (by allowing discounted titles on the Playstation Store, and free games so long as your subscription is maintained), being given a free month is a sad excuse for a thank you gift, but a brilliant business tactic.
From the consumer's point of view, its entirely pointless to award people with temporary free gifts as an apology for the inconvenience, especially considering how many of us are fully aware as to the TOS that have been set forth for use of the aforementioned service. ( I'll post em below for reference)
However, from a corporate point of view, its very likely that Sony is hoping the free month of Playstation plus will hook enough of their remaining consumers into subscribing to the service, thereby making up for the market loss they have taken due to the outage, breach, and the identity theft incidents.
This is of course due to the type 2 Playstation plus content license posted below which I will bold out the location of.
Please note that this is the entirety of the Playstation plus terms of service clause, not the full TOS.

Premium themes
Game add-ons
Type 2. You will no longer be able to access and use the following PlayStation®Plus Elements after your Subscription Period expires, even if you downloaded them before expiry:
PlayStation®Network games
PS one® games

Premium game elements
If you do not renew your subscription immediately at the end of each Subscription Period, but later renew your subscription, you may lose your rights to access any Type 2 PlayStation®Plus Elements.
PlayStation®Plus Elements may also be available for non-subscribers to purchase from the PlayStation®Store.
The following PlayStation®Plus Elements are only available for subscribers to access and use during the Subscription Period. Additional terms relating to individual PlayStation®Plus Elements are set out below:
Automatic download
You can choose to activate automatic download on your PS3™ via System Settings on the XMB™. This feature can only be activated or deactivated by one PSN account per PS3™ and the setting will then apply to all PSN accounts registered to that console. Each PSN account may only activate this feature on one PS3™ at a time.
When automatic download is activated on your console, provided that the console is on stand-by and connected to the internet, the console will be automatically activated approximately every 48 hours during a time period set by you. During that period, various Services such as system software, game patches and game demos may be automatically downloaded to the console ("Automatically Downloaded Material").
Any system software updates made available as Automatically Downloaded Material will not be installed until you have accepted the relevant terms for that system software. Game patches will be based on the games most recently played on your console. There may be a limit on the number of automatically downloaded game demos available per console at any time. Once this limit is reached, un-accessed game demos may be deleted to make room for new game demos during each subsequent automatic download. Automatically Downloaded Material which has not been accessed within one month of download may be automatically deleted from your console.
Automatically Downloaded Material may not be downloaded if the remaining disk space on your console is less than 5GB, your console is already switched on at the time you have chosen for the automatic download or the system software is not the most recent release.
Automatic Download does not affect your rights and obligations set out in Clause 10.
Discounts
From time to time, during your Subscription Period, you will be offered discounted prices on certain PlayStation®Store Services. Rights to those Services will be specified in the product description at the time of purchase.
Early access to new releases
From time to time, during your Subscription Period, you may have the chance to purchase new releases on the PlayStation®Store before they become available to non-subscribers.
Full game trial
From time to time, during your Subscription Period you may be offered the opportunity to download full versions of games to play on a free trial basis. The length of the trial will be specified in the product description. You must be connected to the PSN when the game is booted for the first time. The trial period will run from first boot. During the trial period, save files will be created and trophies can be unlocked, but will not be uploaded to the server. If you later purchase the game, your saved files and trophies will be applied.
Priority access to beta game titles
From time to time, during your Subscription Period, you may be offered priority access to beta game titles. Participation in beta trials is not guaranteed, and will be subject to Additional Conditions.
Online storage
During your Subscription Period, you may be able to upload game saves from the XMB™ to be stored in a remote server and to download those game saves to the same PS3™ or another PS3™ that you log on to using your account. You may download games that are not copy protected an unlimited number of times. You may only download copy protected games once every 24 hours. At any one time, your total game save data in the online storage must not exceed 150mb. If you do not renew your PlayStation®Plus subscription immediately at the end of each Subscription Period, but later renew your subscription within six months, you will be able to access game saves that you uploaded to the remote server during your earlier Subscription Period.
A year of free identity theft protection is not a cheap thing to hand out after all, especially given the number of people that will accept it, and this if successful will go a long way in making up for the cost of that protection.
Not surprisingly, there have been mixed reactions as to their "welcome back" program.
Some consumers are just happy to have the services nearly fully restored and are elated to be receiving some sort of compensation, others are displeased at the program calling it a "sham" or "a pitiful excuse to attempt to buy back the market with outdated software and sales pitches".
Sony it seems, has found itself caught in between a rock and a hard place.
If they fail at reassuring the minds of their consumer base, they will have a very rough time in the foreseeable future with sales, yet if they do as the consumers ask, they will suffer a harsh loss of their profits in order to quell the market.
In the end, nothing seems to have changed much, aside from Sony being looked at as a less secure brand name in regards to online services, and a shaken marketplace.
