“This generation has been way too long, and I say this because you have a lot of developers that work on a new platform, and perhaps will not succeed, so they will wait for the next generation, and will jump on that platform," Merceron said. "You could not do that with this generation though. So these developers went elsewhere to see if the grass was greener. They found Web browsers, they found iOS, they found other things and a lot of them won't come back to the hardware platforms." Stated Square Enix worldwide technology director; Julien Merceron.
However, game fans on Gamespot would beg to differ, and their arguments seem far more valid and with a much stronger basis.
One user stated: "I don't understand his argument. How many companies decide, " I/We don't like this platform/generation; let's wait another four or five years to develop a game"? Are the staff paid in this period, or do they all work at Tescos in the meantime?"
Another claimed " We've reached a point, even within the realm of PC games, where the creativity of developers has not kept up with the progression of the hardware. In other words, beefed up hardware offers little real value to the core gameplay experience itself. The gaming industry is flat-out stagnant from a creative standpoint, and updated hardware will do very little to inject life into it. Unless console makers can develop something that truly evolves the core gaming experiences beyond delivering better graphics, I have serious doubts that an upgraded console would have any chance of succeeding."
Recently there has been a drastic rise in the number of active Indie Developers compared to previous consoles, and many claim its due to the now affordable dev kits.
Could this be a reason that might be making Square - Enix feel the competition's potential? Do you feel square has done better or worse than last generation? And, would you say now is the time for a new generation of console hardware to emerge?
